Fractured, Sensitive, Strong

We were at the school picnic, when a rainbow appeared just before it started to sprinkle a bit of rain.

That's when someone told me that you had fallen.

I said 'That doesn't sound unlike Aidan'...and they were like 'No, like he's hurt bad.' They pointed. I spotted you wearing blue and blue, sitting on the ground near the zip line piece. I started running. Almost like in slow motion, while running I saw your teacher, Ms. Gwyn arrive first, crouching down next to you and comforting you. Your Mommy was running toward you from the other side of the picnic. We arrived at your side at the same time.

You were covered in wood chips, snot, and tears and were wailing loudly. You were hurt bad. And you didn't want to move. We comforted you, hugged you, Ms. Gwyn got you an ice pack.

A lady told us that you had fallen and landed on your shoulder. "Whatever he says hurts, I would believe him," she said.

We calmed you down, though you were still in tears. Several of your friends came to check on you to see if you were okay. Ryder, Jeet, Diesel, Ella, Wells, Mr. Lewicki.

Another dad - who was a doctor or PA- came by to check you out. He suggested we get you home, keep the arm elevated, and take you to the ER in the morning.

So that's what we did.

You were so brave, facing your fear of pain to get up, get to the car, and get home. Mommy kind of gave you a little 'spit bath', and you fell asleep easily; you'd calmed down and even though we were worried, we knew you were safe. Before you fell asleep you were already trying to move it.

After you were asleep, I was so moved by the love your teacher Ms. Gwyn showed you, that I had to share my gratitude. It's hard as a parent to imagine that anyone could love you kiddos as much as you do, but your teacher had shown the love to you, and cared for you, and I had to let her know. I hope you're not embarrassed, but I wrote her this email:

She replied, confirming that you and she are a great match. We are SO thankful to have her as one of your teachers!
Aww! I totally cried reading this. Caring for Aidan is effortless. He and I match in a way that makes it easy for me to connect with him. I do try to be the best teacher I can be for him, but I have to say, when I look at how much he’s grown and matured, I am amazed, and I know for sure that my part in that growth is just one piece of an incredible fabric of love and support that he gets from his family, his other teachers, and his friends. Mostly, though, Aidan’s growth is all him.    He works hard and thinks hard, and we all have the honor of being with him in the process.

The next morning, after you played some video games with one limp-noodle arm and ate some breakfast with one limp-noodle arm, Mommy took you to the ER.

The x-ray technicians new with just a quick glance at these images that you had fractured your left humerus. They also were amazed at how strong you were..they were like "wow! this kid is moving his arm an awful lot for having a fracture that bad!" They prescribed a sling- no cast- and keeping it elevated.

...And while your arm bone had a break in it, your spirit was not broken. In fact, that day after returning from the ER, you wanted to go swimming- so you did- and you still wanted to spend the night with Yaya and Baba (and Julia too of course), while Mommy and I went out for her birthday date (according to previously scheduled plans). And it's a good thing you did...because you and Yaya decorated the HECK out of your sling. Check out that sling bling!

And life continued! You went to school, you showered, you played; we read and chatted and played 'sloth tag' and 'slow wrestling' and your spirit, your true spirit shone through.

And with every rainstorm comes a rainbow, and you got a lot of rainbows here... bonding time with Yaya, revealing shows of care by some of your friends, and a true display of love from your teacher (and your parents too, I must say)...who are still feeling very mushy!

With a fractured arm, you still were able to finish your reading folder with Miss Newman and earn your long-desired LOBSTER DINNER :)

With a fractured arm, you and Mommy had a great son-mommy weekend while J and I were at Rainbow Pizza, and you played Uno, and wrote in your journal, and watched grown up movies like Thor: Ragnorok and Dragonheart.

Now, at the end of Dragonheart, the dragon dies. He sacrifices himself to save his friend. This hit you hard. Mommy told us that after the movie she found you laying in bed with your blanket over your head. She sat down next to you and you were in tears. You were so sad for the dragon, so sad that he had to die. You have such a strong heart, and are such a sensitive young man. And even though we may get fractured from time to time, you have shown that resilience...the ability to stand up and keep on keepin' on...is the true measure of a man...and you're still a boy!

An amazing young boy, who I'm honored to call son.

I love you Aidan, and I'm so proud of you.

Proverbial Treasures: The Things you Say- 2016 Edition...

You two are amazing. You are growing up to be remarkable children, and amazing people.

Aidan, you are earnest, sensitive, funny, loving, passionate, smart, occasionally defiant, and so sweet.

Julia, you are clever, cerebral, able, goofy, energetic, occasionally stubborn, creative, and so much fun.

That's not to say that those lists of superlatives couldn't be applied vice versa, but I just wanted to let you know that you are so complicated and interesting and amazing. So much of what I chronicle here are our adventures and milestones met. But, just like I said last year, some of the most interesting insights into your minds are what you say.

Aidan 2016

I had the privilege of going hand-in-hand with a very brave and excited young girl named Julia to get her cast off!

You were excited to get the cast off. How excited? This excited!

You had collected quite a little autograph collection on your cast! Including Mommy, Daddy, Aidan, Ms. Mary, Mr. Lewicki, Cora, Yaya, Baba, Mimi, and Pops!

 So...how excited were you again?

THIS excited!

And 2 minutes with a guy with a little buzz saw and...voila:

We looked at your bones with the Doctor and he was pleased with the healing!

So were you!

We celebrated by getting stickers and taking selfies...

And a Pedicure from Mommy!

Whew! It looks like clear sailing from here! Back to your regularly scheduled programming!

Now Casting...

Julia's first day of school:

Julia's second day of school:

Julia's sixth day of school:

Do you spot what's different between day 1 and day 6?

Check verrrrry carefully! There you go! It's a PINK, Camouflage CAST!

How did that get there? Let me tell you!

After your second day of school, you were running around the house, and slipped on the paw of a giant stuffed puppy you were carrying. You fell. You cried. We put a bandaid on it and comforted you. That much has happened many times.

But this time was different.

Hours later, you were still nursing it. There was no bruising, no swelling, no bleeding, no protrusion. We called the nurse and they said to let you sleep on it, and maybe it would be better in the morning. But, in the middle of the night you woke up screaming because you had rolled on it. In the morning, you very much wanted to go to school. We said if you could put your hand on top of your head you could go, and you just couldn't do it.

We knew we had to take you to the doctor. So, you missed your third day of school, and instead got to spend it with me!

Now, even though your arm was hurting and you would cry if it got touched, moved, or looked at in the wrong way, we still had our fun.

We worked from home in the morning until we could get a doctor's appointment. You colored with your left hand.

We played 'i spy with my little eye' at Dr. Accordino's. She gave you a lollipop and a rubber glove balloon!

We played rubber glove balloon one-handed catch in the waiting room at the x-ray imaging lab.

In the x-ray lab, you had a few tears and a got two cool stickers!

You got to see what your BONES looked like!

You and me holding hands...

The doctor called and said that the x-rays showed that nothing was broken. That was cool! You were able to move your arm in certain ways...slowly...without pain. But no twisting....and no tight fists. But, you wanted to go to school, so...you dragged your arm and your brother to school!

But, it was still bothering you and still bothering your doctor. She recommended we go to a specialist...so on Friday you and Mommy went to an orthopedic surgeon who took more x-rays and gave you a bear. They discovered that there were IRREGULARITIES in your GROWTH PLATE in your ELBOW.

That means, kinda broken. So they gave you a cast. You chose rainbow. They were out of rainbow. You chose pink cammo!

...and with your arm immobilized so it could heal...you, my brave, awesome, strong Julia were ready to play, have fun, wrestle, jump, bounce, and be yourself again. What a relief! It was so sad to watch you be down in the dumps because you couldn't do everything you wanted to do due to a boo boo in your arm!

So...you immediately felt better...and immediately got to work being a normal 3 year old again!

You goofed around, got some candy, and chased your brother:

Standard hygiene protocols returned:

Still some left-handed coloring and drawing, but a lot of right-handed artistry happened too!

Regular playing commenced:

Jump Street action happened:

Dress up and catchin' frogs resumed:

Outings were fun again:

...and general goofballery was back to the forefront:

Casting is the best. So glad you're feeling better, Miss Julia!

Update: on Day 4 of wearing the cast you came to me and Mommy and said "Um...Mommy, you forgot to take this cast off last night." You took the news pretty well that you had approximately 2 more weeks in the cast. 2 more weeks of armored arm, trash bag bathing, scratching with the back of a plastic fork, and getting dressed and undressed as if it were for the first time. You're doing so well, Julia! Cast-on... Cast -away!

Update 2: Julia- "I wish I was a real kid...with no broken arm." Soon...soon :)

Update 3: You can't keep a good girl down:
