The Many 8th Birthdays of Aidan

Aidan, today you are EIGHT years old. Your Mommy and I are almost in disbelief. You are strong, curious, sensitive, caring, creative, sometimes-stubborn, always passionate young man. You love legos, you love comic books, you love movies and tv shows and playing iPad. You love nature- and finding worms and snakes and frogs. You love food- dumplings and salmon sushi and breads of all kind and mango. You love to sing and dance.

And WE love you. and all that you are, and all that you have become.

I wrote the following on your birthday and shared it with family and friends, as I contemplated you growing from this...

...to this before our very eyes:

...and just like that, our Aidan is 8 years old. He is funny, creative, sensitive, loving, and silly. He can be oh-so quiet, and spend hours playing with Legos or reading or peering at 'find it' books. He can be oh-so loud, talking, telling stories or jokes, or singing Gorillaz or Bon Jovi or the Coco soundtrack. He physically cannot whisper...this makes playing 'telephone' very interesting. He is dramatic, strong, persistent, adventurous, sometimes-fragile, and kind-hearted. He's never met a stranger. He loves Sonic the Hedgehog and Luigi and thinks that a lot of villains, like Bowser, Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, the Big Bad Wolf, aren't too bad actually. He loves salmon sushi, mango, and pretty much any carb ever invented. He is a fighter, and has been from the day he was born. He still loves to cuddle and be held, and can't sleep without a blanket that was given to him 8 years ago. He still has trouble remembering the difference between "beginning" and "end." Transitions are tough, but getting easier and easier. He has been way into making paper finger puppets and decorating them like characters from Star Wars and "Dog Man." He loves his sister without fail (and even used his birthday money to buy her a Stormtrooper watch), and finding snakes and frogs and bugs in our backyard. His laugh is infectious. His smile does something to my soul. He is our Aidan, and we are so proud to be his parents and be by his side on this journey. Happy Birthday, son!

And it's all true...so how do we celebrate someone this special and amazing? Like this:

So, this February, we celebrated your birthday with you on many occasions. Check out what your friends and family had to say about you turning eight:

#1. Official birthday party- your friends joined you for an awesome, ticket and pizza filled time at Nicklemania.

Such a sweet moment- the big cake reveal. You were so pleased!

Your favorite gifts were BOOKS of Dogman and Captain Underpants from your godparents! You read and read and read... and you loved the Legos you got too!

#2- Joint birthday celebration with Pops at Benihana!

#2 continued into Bowling the next day!

#3: Dumplings and Hanging out with Yaya, Baba, Joe, and Sham! (see video)

#4: Camping! You and I went camping and although there were no cakes or candles, there was plenty of 'fireflies' and you were awarded an EAGLE feather for your birthday!

#5. Your actual birthday! Notes in your lunch, balloons on your bedroom door, cake and love...

Your mommy and I are SO proud of you, and - 8 years later- still so, so in love with you. Here's to many, many more, our special, wonderful, amazing boy.
